The discreet charm of Forte dei Marmi

One of the most popular seaside resorts on the Tyrrhenian coast, Forte dei Marmi has grown up around a pier built in the 16th century for the loading of Apuan marble; this was protected in 1788 by a fort built by Leopoldo I, which may be seen in the centre, in Piazza Garibaldi. Aristocrats from all over Europe, diplomats, buisnessmen, capitains of industry, artists and celebrities came to spend relaxing holidays in this resort noted for its fine sands, many of them builing splendid villas amidst the pinewoods.
